CIP successfully delivers to Oil Pipe Project

18 Oct 2003
Corus International Projects based in London have successfully delivered 8,100 tonnes of seamless linepipe to Libya's Waha Oil Company on schedule. However, the unique 12 months project  - successfully completed in July - was made more than usually difficult by the combinations of specification and delivery required.

The pipe - 256 kilometres of it - ranging from 3 inches to 10 inches in diameter started life in Italy and Austria before going to the Ruhr for flanging and coating and being sent onward to Antwerp for shipment to the port of Ras Lanuf.

Six separate orders for three different sites were made more complex by the sizes, quantities and delivery schedules involved. The demanding logistical exercise was managed by CIP in co-operation with pipe suppliers - Voest Alpine and Dalmine, coaters - Tuboscope Vetco, flange welders and fabricators - Carl Hamm Geotechnic and freight forwarders - New Wave Logistics. Monitoring the process on behalf of Waha were their German representatives, MedOil GmbH whilst the inspection division of Tuboscope provided third party inspection.

Pipe production and delivery was co-ordinated from the supplying mills into the coating and fabrication sites in Germany whilst CIP monitored the flow of materials throughout to ensure on-time delivery for each shipment. All pipework was given a special internal coating to protect it against the aggressive environments of the gas and oil industry. The flanged pipes had to be specially packed to withstand the rigours of the sea shipment and the journey across the Libyan Desert.

For Dave Cowin, Senior Shipping Controller, the project is an ideal example of CIP's strength and flexibility. He says:

'Drawing on our relationships with European pipe mills and supply chain partners, we have successfully delivered a large-scale bespoke package, on time, within budget and as per the customer's requirements.'
